Hello Marine

BIOGRAPHY
EXHIBITIONS
Hello Marine (Marine Gentils) is a French-born artist living and working in Brighton. Born in Paris and raised in the South West of France, she studied Graphic Design at the University of Brighton before establishing an international career as an illustrator. Over nearly two decades, she has created commissioned work for clients including The New York Times, Dior, Lacoste and Penguin, while steadily developing her own distinctive artistic practice.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Hello Marine creates paintings that balance bold simplicity with a sophisticated understanding of colour, pattern and composition. Her work occupies a space between still life and abstraction, transforming familiar plants, interiors and everyday objects into joyful arrangements of shape and colour. Rather than seeking perfect representation, she distils her subjects into their essential forms, allowing colour, rhythm and carefully considered relationships to carry the emotional weight of each composition.
Nature remains a constant source of inspiration, reflecting both her upbringing in southern France and her life on the Sussex coast. Combined with influences ranging from Henri Matisse and the Fauvist painters to Margaret Kilgallen and contemporary design, her paintings possess an unmistakable visual confidence while retaining a warmth and accessibility that invites prolonged looking.
Although her practice has evolved from illustration into painting, the clarity of line and instinctive sense of balance developed through years of drawing remain central to her work. Rich colour palettes, playful compositions and a love of pattern create paintings that feel both contemporary and timeless, celebrating the beauty found in ordinary objects and everyday moments.
Hello Marine has exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, including exhibitions in France, the United States and Australia. Her paintings are held in private collections worldwide and continue to attract collectors drawn to their optimism, thoughtful composition and enduring sense of joy.
