Milo Hartnoll is a British contemporary painter based in Brighton. Working primarily in oil, his practice explores the meeting point between traditional painting and the visual language of contemporary life. Drawing influence from popular culture, internet culture, found imagery and the constant flow of digital media, his work reflects on the way images are created, shared and consumed in the modern world.

After studying Illustration at the University of Brighton, Hartnoll continued his training at the Draw Atelier under the tuition of artist Jake Spicer, developing a strong grounding in observational drawing and classical painting techniques. While this traditional approach remains central to his practice, his work is driven by experimentation rather than convention. Each painting becomes an opportunity to test new ideas, balancing careful observation with instinctive mark-making and an expressive use of colour.

Hartnoll is fascinated by the visual language of the digital age. References to memes, internet culture, selfies, screenshots and image glitches appear throughout his work, not as direct illustrations but as painterly devices that interrupt and reshape the image. Rather than recreating the digital world, he translates its pace and complexity through the physical language of paint. His paintings often occupy a space between realism and abstraction, where familiar subjects emerge through energetic brushwork before dissolving into colour, texture and gesture. This interplay between analogue and digital, order and chaos, gives his work its distinctive character.

Alongside his own studio practice, Hartnoll was one of the principal founding members and driving forces behind the international painting collective Cane-Yo!. Formed through an ongoing dialogue between artists across the world, the collective fostered a collaborative community dedicated to painting, encouraging the exchange of ideas, techniques and creative experimentation. Although he has since stepped back from organising the group, he continues to exhibit with Cane-Yo! and is widely recognised as one of the artists who helped establish its creative direction and collaborative ethos.

Hartnoll has exhibited throughout the UK and internationally, with work shown across Europe and Australia. Working from his Brighton studio, he continues to develop a practice rooted in curiosity, experimentation and a genuine love of painting. His work reflects both the traditions of the medium and the rapidly evolving visual culture that surrounds us, resulting in paintings that feel contemporary, thoughtful and deeply engaging.
