Description
L'Île d'Oléron shows Marine Gentils' evolving practice, drawing inspiration from the distinctive landscapes of France's Atlantic coastline.
Painted in sumptuous, richly layered pigments, the work distils the landscape into bold planes of colour and simplified forms. Deep ultramarine trees frame a tranquil expanse of water, while warm earth tones and soft pink skies evoke the shifting light and quiet atmosphere of the island. Rather than documenting a particular view, Marine captures the essence of a place its rhythm, colour and sense of stillness.
Known for transforming everyday subjects through her distinctive use of colour and composition, Marine applies the same considered approach to the landscape. Reduced to its essential forms, the painting invites the viewer to slow down and experience the calm, contemplative quality of the French coast.
Part of a new body of work inspired by the French landscape, L'Île d'Oléron reflects Marine's continuing exploration of colour, memory and place.
