Description
Here is a clutch of three Stone Petrospheres by Knight — objects of true wonder. The first is a finished black granite Towie ball, the second a grey granite six-sided sphere, and the third an oolitic limestone six-sided sphere.
Each of these pieces has been shaped in the traditional manner, through the slow and meticulous pecking and hammering of the stone by hand using flint tools. This painstaking process takes countless hours of labour. The final polishing and decoration of each sphere is equally intricate and time-consuming.
Little is known about the original purpose of these ancient forms, yet through recreating them, the artist invites discussion about their meaning and significance. His work bridges the gap between ancient mystery and contemporary exploration.
It is rare for such pieces to be offered for sale. They mark an extraordinary moment,  a contemporary gallery presenting to the public what might otherwise belong to the historical record of our land. Is this fine art or practical archaeology? Perhaps it is both.
 
As with all of the artist’s work, nothing compares to holding his wonderfully tactile carving in your hands. His work demonstrates remarkable mastery in the art of carving.
